Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Who is welcome in your classes?

Everyone! Kari firmly believes that dance is one of the best ways to celebrate the body you are in today! All bodies are welcome. If you have additional questions, please contact Kari.

What is group improv bellydance?

Kari teaches Synchronized Group Improvisation Bellydance, formerly known as American Tribal Style (ATS) or FatChanceBellyDance (FCBD) Style®. Developed in the late 1980s by FatChanceBellyDance in San Francisco, it embraces dynamic improvisation for group performances rather than relying on memorized choreography. Because the leader changes and each dancer interprets the music differently, performances are created in the moment.

This dance is a stylized fusion of traditional bellydance techniques. It blends classic Raqs Sharqi with other folkloric and modern dance styles. You may recognize dance influences from the Middle East, North Africa, India, and Spain.

Where do I start?

Level 1 will be taught in six-week sessions. You will learn the fundamental fast and slow dance steps, foot and arm placement, posture, simple zil patterns, formations, and the cues for each movement.

Is Level 1 a beginner class?

Yes. Although, there may be advanced dancers in the class who are seeking to refine and polish their technique. Going back to the fundamentals is helpful for dancers at any level.

Should I still start with Level 1 even if I’ve been dancing for a long time?

Because this is a unique format, it has its own movement language and cueing system. That said, any previous dance experience will likely help you pick up the movements more quickly.

What if I have studied other group improv formats (ATS/FCBD®/ITS) – should I still begin with Level 1?

Each group improv troupe/instructor may speak the same overall “language” but have a dialect specific to their troupe. Starting with Level 1 will help you get grounded in those nuances.

Do you offer make up classes if I miss a class?

No make up classes but, at the beginning of each class, we will review what was taught the previous week.

How can I guarantee my space in the next Level 1 session?

To join an upcoming session, please contact Kari to be added to the class.

What about your Mixed Level class?

Thursday night's 6:00pm class is mixed-level and drop-in friendly! Depending on who is in attendance, we may focus on a new move, drill to sharpen our technique, put together a combo, dance in formation, practice our finger cymbals, or all of the above. Class cost is $15 for drop-in or students may purchase a class card ($65 for 5 classes or $110 for 10 classes).

What should I bring to class?

You may want to bring a water bottle, dance shoes if not comfortable in bare feet, a notebook/pen, finger cymbals (I will have a few sets available to borrow), a hip scarf, and, most importantly, your positive attitude and sense of humor.

The most important question: what do I wear to class???

Wear whatever is comfortable and allows you to move freely. Some dancers wear workout clothing (leggings and a tank top, for example) while others wear full skirts and cholis.
